English 9A (English 9 Skills)
Required of all freshmen whose score on the English section of the Placement Examination (reading, language, verbal) averaged 40 or below.
This Course provides assistance to students who need extra help mastering basic skills in reading and writing. The course will supplement the curriculum designated for freshman English, offeringadditional time to complete assignments, and encourage the development of good study Skills.

English 9 (Required of all freshmen)
Students study rules of grammar and use these skills in writing shor texpository paragraphs and essays. students also study vocabulary and spelling. Units on literature will focus on devoloping an appreciation of the author's craft, and will help teach the student the literary terminology which will enable him to speak and write about literature.

Freshman Honors English
Pre-requisite: 75 or higher on the three English sections on Placement Examination.
This course is designed for students who show a proficiency in English. Students will spend less time on grammatical review and more time in reading and studying literaturew which will include additional units in drama, poertry, and the novel. Special emphasis will be placed on the development of narrative, descriptive and expository writing skills.

English 10 (Required for all sophomores)
Students will study grammar and composition, focusing on descriptive, expository, and analytical essays. The course also includes a literatrue component which will introduce students to various genres (i.e. poetry, the short story, and the novel)

Sophomore Honors English
Pre-requisite: recommendation of present intstructor; 3.4 cumulative G.P.A. or 3.7 G.P.A. in English; approval of department chairperson.
Students will continue to develop their narrative, descriptive and expository writing skills. A minimum of time will be spent on grammatical review. Special emphasis will be placed on the study of short story, drama, and poetry. This study will include written analysis of literature studied. The anthology will be supplemented by the study of four novels selected from a Sophomore Honors English reading list.

American Literature 11
American Literature Students will review grammatical principles and will write longer, more analytical essays and papers. Vocabulary and test taking skills will also be studied. This course provides the student with an overview of the American literary tradition. Periods of American Literature are surveyed in several genres. The course is designed for junior level students, who will be simultaneously enrolled in United States History.

British Literature  12
Students will review grammatical rules and usage, spelling, and vocabulary. At least half of the student's time will be devoted to writing essays and longer analytical papers, including the literary research paper. The course will also provide an intensive study of English literature from different historical periods presented in different genres. The literature will be presented in a historical context and will include major works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and the Romantic poets.

A.P. English 3, 4 - 11, 12

Advanced Placement English 3 and English 4 are requiring a cumulative GPA of 3.4 and GPA of 3.7 in English.

These courses are designed for particularly talented students of English who plan to attend college. The student is required to study more difficult texts that he would normally study in a regular class. Students will study drama, poetry, the short story, the essay, and the novel. Much emphasis will be placed on developing exemplary writing skills. The student may receive college credit for his course work if he performs well on the Advanced Placement English exam administered by the College Board. Summer reading list required for both courses.

Creative Writing  10, 11, 12
This class is designed for students who are interested in creativ writing. The prerequisites are present English teacher recommendation and instructor approval. The student will write frequently; at least half of his time in class will be spent in reqriting essays. The Creative Writing Class will help produce the literary journal.

Drama, Advanced Drama 9, 10, 11, 12
This course will include study, preparation, and class presantion of pantomimes, scenes and radings.
The second semester of Drama will focus on the study and performance of major plays and works of Dramatic literature. Theatre history, set design, study of dramatic literature, a Class productive play, and in-depth study of major genres in drama will also be emphasized.

Film History and Appreciation - 11, 12
This course focuses on motion pictures as an art from and as a mass commnication medium. Students will explore film  as a tool for devoloping plot, theme, tone, and characterization. Screenings serve as a basis for lectures, group discussions, and critical writing. Students may elect to take the course for one or two semester. Each semester focuses on six individual genres of film. The one year course encompasses a total of twelve genres.
