Spartans battle Chino Hills on Thursday for Sierra League spot |
|
Original Article in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune by Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
From an emotionally-draining standpoint, it should have been the end of Damien High School's football season. The Spartans built a cushy 33-20 lead over Ayala on Oct. 19 and were only a yard from scoring another touchdown and providing the explanation point with 2:13 left when a fumble led to an unimaginable chain of events. Without going into all the theatrics, it ended with the Bulldogs' improbable come-from-behind victory when they scored in the final seconds to squeeze out a 34-33 victory. The Spartans fell to 2-4-1 and 0-2 in the Sierra League, leaving them no choice but to win their final three games to have a shot at the playoffs. Spartans coach Scott Morrison was a hot topic of discussion on the Tribune blogs, and his players had a tough time picking themselves up the following Monday. But perseverance is everything. After back-to-back victories over Diamond Bar (41-12) and Chino (31-7), the Spartans (4-4-1, 2-2) will host Chino Hills (6-2-1, 2-2) on Thursday with a Sierra League playoff berth on the line. |

Damien in driver's seat for at least share of title |
|
Original Article by Clay Fowler, Staff Writer of The Sun
CHINO HILLS - Damien High School virtually guaranteed itself a Sierra League boys water polo co-championship on Tuesday with a 10-8 win at Ayala. The Sierra League schedule allowed the Nos. 3 and 6 teams from CIF-Southern Section Division III to match their 3-0 league records. With both teams having handily defeated the other three teams in the Sierra League in their first round of games, No. 3 Damien will share the league title even if it falls to Ayala in the final game of the regular season. Damien's Tommy Pacheco scored four goals, including the go-ahead score with 3:07 remaining in the game during a man advantage. |

Damien Beats Riverside Poly 25-7 |
|
|
Original Article in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune
By Pete Marshall Staff Writer
RIVERSIDE - The short break at halftime seemed to make all the difference for Damien on Friday night.
After
a scoreless first half marked by missed opportunities, Ryan McMahon
returned the second-half kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and Damien
went on to beat Riverside Poly, 25-7, in the season opener for both
schools at Riverside Community College.
"We have room for improvement," Damien coach Scott Morrison
said. "But this is a (Poly) team that is much better than last year.
They run a different system (with new coach Jeff Huerta) that we were
able to see at the junior varsity level, which we knew they would run
better at varsity."
